The new Starbuntu version 22.04.4.7 was released. In addition to the new Linux kernel 6.5.0-41, it contains a significant improvement to the routine for Starbuntu installation and new user setup as well as extensive bug fixing.
The Tails 6.4 release, dated June 18, 2024, introduces several new features and updates. Notably, it now stores a random seed on the USB stick to enhance cryptographic strength. Key updates include switching to HTTPS for APT repositories, updating Tor Browser to 13.0.16, the Tor client to 0.4.8.12, and Thunderbird to 115.12.0. Various issues have been fixed, such as problems unlocking the Persistent Storage, connecting to mobile broadband, and an error in Tor Browser’s homepage. Automatic upgrades are available from Tails 6.0 or later, and manual upgrade instructions are provided for various operating systems.
The packages in 6.0 were compiled in OpenEmbedded (OE) Scarthgap-release, with my 'meta-quirky' layer. The Scarthgap release of OE/Yocto is a new LTS series, supported until April 2028. See their announcement. My meta-quirky layer adds an additional approximately 240 package build recipes, not in the official OE/Yocto project, as well as many patches for the official build recipes. EasyOS 6.0 continues the practice of including a very large number of packages built-in, including Celluloid, Chromium, Dia, Flowblade, Geany, Gimp, Gparted, Grisbi, Inkscape, LibreOffice, NoteCase, Osmo, Planner, SolveSpace, Symphytum, as well as myriad smaller applications and utilites.
Alpine Linux 3.20.1 has been released as a maintenance update for the 3.20 series, featuring various bug fixes and security updates. Key security patches include fixes for CVE-2024-4741 in OpenSSL and CVE-2023-42364 and CVE-2023-42365 in busybox. The update also brings numerous package upgrades and improvements across different components such as PHP, .NET, Plasma, Minio, and many others. The Fatdog team has released Fatdog64-902 Final on June 15, 2024, specifically addressing the Linux kernel bug CVE-2024-1086. Users can find details on downloading, changes from previous versions, and installation or upgrade instructions in the release notes. Notably, this version allows the reuse of save files from Fatdog64-900/901. The previous releases, Fatdog64-901 and Fatdog64-900, addressed the glibc bug CVE-2023-4911 and marked the first final release in the 900 series, respectively. Users who downloaded the early 900 ISO are advised to re-download due to last-minute fixes.
NuTyX 24.06.1, along with cards 2.7.4, has been released, featuring the new LXQt 2.0 based on Qt6. Significant package updates include SysV 3.09, systemd 253.0, glibc 2.39, gcc 14.1.0, and python 3.12.4. Various desktop environments have been updated, such as XFCE 4.18.3, MATE 1.28.1, GNOME 46.1, and KDE Plasma 6.0.5. The release also includes updated software like Firefox 126.0.1, Telegram-desktop 5.0.1, and LibreOffice 24.2.4.2. Core NuTyX ships with multiple LTS kernels, including the latest stable version 6.9.5. Bug fixes are implemented, and a new upgrade process is outlined for KDE5 users. Peropesis 2.6 has been released with numerous updates to its software components. Key updates include versions: cmake 3.29.5, dhcpcd 10.0.8, gcc 14.1.0, glib 2.80.2, linux 6.9.4, and python 3.12.4, among others. The release also features the addition of the full grub 2.12 package. The total volume of Peropesis 2.6 is 278 MB, and it is available for download. A complete list of the bundled software can be found on the distribution's bundle page.
As always we target the most recent Alpine release. In case of v24.06 it is the excellent Alpine Linux 3.20. User Interfaces (UIs): GNOME Shell on Mobile 46_git20240610 replaces 45_git20230908 from v23.12. This version allows triggering the keyboard with double-tap on the bottom bar, and it has a new scheduling manager that improves UI smoothness. Thanks to @verdre, @azisu and all the GNOME contributors! KDE Plasma Mobile 6.0.5 replaces version 5.27.10 from v23.12. After nearly 10 years since the first release of Plasma 5, the KDE MegaRelease 6 brings a huge number of improvements across the whole stack. Among other things, the homescreen has been rewritten for Plasma Mobile 6 and now allows users to customize pages with apps, folders and widgets, as well as using an app drawer and search. There is also a new welcome screen on first launch for setting up Wi-Fi, timezones, etc. Thanks to @EspiDev and all the KDE contributors! Phosh 0.39 replaces version 0.33 from v23.12. Some of the highlights are folders in the app overview, better handling of devices with notches, selecting Wi-Fi networks via the quick settings and opening the on-screen keyboard via a long press on the bottom bar. The XigmaNAS® 13.3.0.5 - Hesterion release includes important upgrade instructions and new features. Users are advised to back up their configuration files before upgrading. A fresh installation can be done via LiveUSB or LiveCD. GEOM RAID5 is no longer supported, so data must be migrated to ZFS before upgrading. Post-upgrade, users should clear browser caches and back up configuration files and databases. Notably, the update includes numerous software upgrades like FreeBSD 13.3-RELEASE P2, PHP 8.3.7, and many more. The default login credentials for various interfaces are provided, and it is recommended to change these passwords immediately after installation. Additionally, certain functionalities and compatibility notes, such as the incompatibility of the "Extended GUI" community extension with this release, are highlighted.
A new x64 version of the Runtu LITE 24.04 distribution, based on the Noble Numbat 24.04 LTS package base, is available. This distribution, built with debootstrap, includes a basic system and an Openbox window manager with LXDE elements. Its primary goal is to offer an Ubuntu-based system with a minimal environment and no Snap packages, thus enabling the use of the latest Linux kernel and software without increasing hardware requirements. This version does not include office software, internet applications, audio or video players, leaving the choice to the user. Key components include LightDM, Openbox, PCManFM, LXPanel, NetworkManager, Geany, xfce4-power-manager, Blueman, and Pipewire. Minimum system requirements are 2048MB RAM, x64 CPU, and 8GB HDD. Login: runtu, password: empty. Snap applications are disabled by default, but can be enabled if needed. Additional repositories for Mozilla Firefox and Nvidia drivers are included.
